Returning to Reading - Post Reading-Slump TBR List

Sunday, May 14, 2017

I'll be honest - the past few months I've been incredibly busy and not had as much time to read as I'd like. Although I don't have any exams this year, college has still been incredibly hectic and I've had plenty of homework assignments and mock exams to prepare for, as well as my extended project which is now completed. Carrying out all of this and managing my blog as well means that I've really struggled to find time in my day to chill out and read. Whenever I've had a few spare minutes for reading, it's often been for one of my English literature set texts, and so novels that I actually want to read have been neglected. However, over the past couple of weeks, I've felt as though my passion for reading has been renewed and I can't wait to jump back into my ever growing TBR list, which I thought I'd share with you today.

Heartless by Marissa Meyer
Catherine may be one of the most desired girls in Wonderland and a favourite of the unmarried King, but her interests lie elsewhere. A talented baker, she wants to open a shop and create delectable pastries. But for her mother, such a goal is unthinkable for a woman who could be a queen. At a royal ball where Cath is expected to receive the King’s marriage proposal, she meets handsome and mysterious Jest. For the first time, she feels the pull of true attraction. At the risk of offending the King and infuriating her parents, she and Jest enter into a secret courtship. Cath is determined to choose her own destiny. But in a land thriving with magic, madness, and monsters, fate has other plans.
I've heard nothing but praise about this book from many different bloggers, and so I was over the moon when a proof copy landed on my doorstep a while ago. I couldn't wait to jump straight into it, but then I became extremely busy and wasn't able to find the time to dedicate myself fully to this novel. Now that my reading slump is over, this will definitely be one of the first books that I read and I'll even post a review of it if that's what you'd like to see some time in the future.

The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August by Claire North
No matter what he does or the decisions he makes, when death comes, Harry always returns to where he began, a child with all the knowledge of a life he has already lived a dozen times before. Nothing ever changes. Until now. As Harry nears the end of his eleventh life, a little girl appears at his bedside. ‘I nearly missed you, Doctor August,’ she says. ‘I need to send a message.’ This is the story of what Harry does next, and what he did before, and how he tries to save a past he cannot change and a future he cannot allow.
This novel has been highly recommended to me numerous times, and so I've been dying to read it for quite some time. This will be my first proper foray into adult fiction, as I normally stick to YA literature when reading as a hobby but had to make an exception for this novel. The fantasy aspects really appeal to me and I find the entire concept genuinely interesting, so hopefully this novel will live up to my expectations!

Ink and Bone by Rachel Caine
Ruthless and supremely powerful, the Great Library is now a presence in every major city, governing the flow of knowledge to the masses. Alchemy allows the Library to deliver the content of the greatest works of history instantly—but the personal ownership of books is expressly forbidden. Jess Brightwell believes in the value of the Library, but the majority of his knowledge comes from illegal books obtained by his family, who are involved in the thriving black market. Jess has been sent to be his family’s spy, but his loyalties are tested in the final months of his training to enter the Library’s service. When his friend inadvertently commits heresy by creating a device that could change the world, Jess discovers that those who control the Great Library believe that knowledge is more valuable than any human life—and soon both heretics and books will burn…
The Great Library of Alexandria is something that I've read about quite a bit and is a subject that definitely intrigues me, so when I discovered this novel based in a dystopian society where it wasn't destroyed, I was instantly hooked. I'm a sucker for dystopian novels and this one sounds incredibly gripping, so when I found it in my local library I picked it up without hesitation. I managed to start this book before the onset of my reading slump and so far I have to say that I really like it, and I'm eager to return to this world and see what happens next.

To Hold the Bridge by Garth Nix
Far to the north of the magical Old Kingdom, the Greenwash Bridge Company has been building a bridge for almost a hundred years. It is not an easy task, for many dangers threaten the bridge builders, from nomad raiders to Free Magic sorcerers. Despite the danger, Morghan wants nothing more than to join the Bridge Company as a cadet. But the company takes only the best, the most skillful Charter mages, and trains them hard, for the night might come when only a single young cadet must hold the bridge against many foes. Will Morghan be that cadet?
I only just realised that all of my TBR consists of fantasy novels - it's clear that I've been eager to delve into some beautifully crafted fantasy worlds and escape reality. This book is no exception, as it's a high fantasy story that I've heard quite a bit about. This book also contains eighteen short stories, which I thought were ideal for breaking me out of my reading slump, as I can just read a couple without having to commit to an incredibly long novel. I'm definitely looking forward to reading this and I can't wait to see what variety it contains.

I hope you enjoyed seeing what my current TBR list is, and hopefully I'll make my way through all of these books relatively soon as by reading slump begins to fade. I'm always open to any more recommendations, so why not let me know your favourite novels down in the comments, as I'd love to give them a go. Thanks for reading and I'll see you again next Sunday!

Love from Daisy x
